What to expect for each Qualification

Apprenticeship: HVAC
(Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning)

You’ll work alongside experienced tradespeople installing, servicing and maintaining refrigeration & air-conditioning systems in homes, commercial buildings and industrial sites. Learn how to: select, size and fit equipment; perform preventative maintenance; diagnose faults; and ensure systems run efficiently. Formal qualification: Certificate III (or equivalent) in Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning (or related electrotechnology/trade qualification).

Typically split between: on-the-job work + structured training at a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). By working in HVAC you will develop strong practical skills, technical troubleshooting, teamwork, safety awareness and customer-interaction skills.

Career pathways - HVAC

  • Qualified HVAC/R Technician (in residential, commercial or industrial sectors)
  • Specialist roles (commercial refrigeration, chilled water systems, HVAC controls)
  • Team Leader / Supervisor in an HVAC business
  • Project Estimator or Designer for HVAC systems
  • Possibly field service contracts or your own business later on
  • Many opportunities across SA and Australia — skilled HVAC people in high demand
Once qualified, you could have the potential of earning from $100,000/year in SA.

Apprenticeship: Electrical

You’ll learn how to install, maintain and repair electrical wiring, components, systems
and equipment in residential, commercial and industrial settings. Tasks may include: running cables, installing switches/outlets/luminaires, reading electrical drawings, ensuring safe electrical systems, fault-finding, high voltage or low voltage work (depending on your pathway). Formal apprenticeship (usually ~4 years) with on-the-job experience + training at an RTO/TAFE.

Key skills: safety (electrical hazards), technical know-how, problem-solving, working at
heights/with tools, documenting work, teamwork and communication.

Career pathways - Electrical

  • Qualified Electrician (residential, commercial, industrial)
  • Specialist electrician (high voltage, instrumentation, automation)
  • Team Leader / Foreperson on a site
  • Estimator or Project Manager within electrical contracting business
  • Own small electrical business or become subcontractor
  • Huge demand across construction, renewable energy, infrastructure

Once qualified as an Electricia, you could have the potential of earning from $100,000/year in SA.
Some FIFO Electrical roles could see you earning from $200,000/year.

Apprenticeship: Security & Data Technician / Installations

This pathway covers installing, configuring and maintaining security, data and communications systems. Think: CCTV, access. control (locks, card readers), intruder alarms, data cabling, network systems in home, schools, offices, industrial sites. You’ll learn to work with both electrical/business low voltage systems and data/communications technology – a hybrid tech/trade role.

Typically: 3 – 4 year apprenticeship (e.g. UEE30420 Certificate III in Data & Voice Communications) with on-job training + classroom.

Key skills: data cabling, testing/commissioning, fault-finding communications systems, working safely, adapting to technology changes, client service.

Career pathways - Security & Data

  • Security & Data Technician (installing CCTV, access control, data networks)
  • Communications / Network Technician (data infrastructure, network cabling)
  • Systems Integrator (combining security, automation, smart-buildings technology)
  • Project Manager or Estimator for security/data contracting business
  • Business owner or specialise in high-end commercial/industrial systems

Once qualified as a Security & Data Technician, you could have the potential of earning from $100,000/year in SA.
